Noguchi Taikai Finland 2027 takes place in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, in early August. For attendees travelling from abroad, here is a brief introduction to the city.
A Short History
Helsinki was founded in 1550 by the Swedish King Gustav Vasa, originally as a trading town intended to rival the Hanseatic city of Tallinn across the Gulf of Finland. For much of its early history it remained a modest port. Its fortunes changed in 1812, when Russia, having annexed Finland as an autonomous Grand Duchy, moved the capital from Turku to Helsinki, partly to distance it from Swedish influence. Much of the neoclassical city center, including Senate Square, was built during this period under Russian rule, giving Helsinki an architectural character distinct from other Nordic capitals.
Finland declared independence in 1917, and Helsinki has since grown into a modern capital of around 670,000 people, known for design, technology, and a strong connection to the surrounding sea and islands.
Why Helsinki in Early August
Early August sits at the tail end of the Finnish summer, when days are still long and the city is at its most active outdoors. It is a practical time of year to travel: mild temperatures, no extreme darkness or cold, and most seasonal attractions, markets, and archipelago boat routes still running.
Helsinki is compact and walkable, with reliable public transport connecting the airport, city center, and surrounding areas, making it straightforward for international visitors to get around without a car.
